my 15 minutes of fame on a Segway
Monday, August 14th, 2006My dream of being featured kissing someone (just anyone) on the cover of a Malaysian newspaper finally came true this week.
Back in 2004, my ex and I were visiting Paris and decided to do the most embarrassingly touristy thing imaginable: go on a Segway tour of the city. We met a reporter (Chin Mui Yoon) and photographer from Malaysia who were doing a piece on the Segway tours, and agreed to let them take pictures of us for their article which should’ve come out later that month. For various reasons, the publishing was held up, and then yesterday (almost three years and two boyfriends later), the author of the article just contacted me to let me know that it finally was published.
So now a photo of us, mounted on Segways, kissing in front of the Eiffel tower is the cover of the weekend lifestyle section of Malaysia’s StarMag. This newspaper, according to Nielsen Media Research Q1 2006, is Malaysia’s most widely-read English-language daily newspaper with a readership of over a million people. This wasn’t the kind of fame I’d expected, but I’ll take it any day over being on a reality television show!
